the sixth flaw
by john ryan gallagher
i have bad taste. i like bad things:
this week i’ve watched ‘little fockers’ every night when falling asleep.
andy gibb is my idol.
james paterson hasn’t released a book in five years that i haven’t quickly digested.
kangaroo jack is one of my favorite movies. i’d also place xanadu, weekend at bernies, and beethoven in my top ten list.
‘knock three times’ by tony orlando and dawn is one of my favorite songs. i’m also a huge fan of chinese democracy, air supply, and rick springfield.
why do i like things that people strongly label as garbage and fluff? i don’t have an answer for that. most of my family thinks i’m a homosexual for my love of olivia newton john and that movie where christopher reeve travels back in time to get with jane seymour. i’ve been laughed at in book stores for asking where they hide the v.c. andrews. i’ve endured scorn and ridicule for thinking the richard gere remake of breathless is better than the original.
there are some widely appreciated things that i do enjoy: npr, velvet underground, dashiel hammet, and little miss sunshine. still, when given a choice between in rainbows and a sheila e record, i’ll take the latter any day of the week.
while all of the other flaws i’ve mentioned so far are legitimate things i need to work on, this one isn’t.
